Service as a Survivor, please click here. Should I attend the Memorial Service? Yes! The Memorial Service is open to everyone. We encourage anyone within the law enforcement community to attend this important event. Last year, an estimated 40,000 people attended!How much does the Memorial Service cost? There is absolutely no charge for attending the Memorial Service.How can I find a reasonably priced hotel for my stay in the Washington area? The Police Week committee has made arrangements with Washington DC Accomodations to provide discounted rates on hotel rooms for our Police Week attendees. Please click here to obtain pricing and reservations. If you have a group please contact Nancy Riker at 202-289-2220 Ext. 102.What should I wear to the Memorial Service? Law enforcement attendees are encouraged to attend in dress uniform. For all other attendees, we suggest wearing business attire. If you are in plain clothes and have a "raid badge", we suggest that you wear your raid badge exposed with a black memorial band across it. Please keep in mind the prevailing weather conditions - it can be very hot that time of year. Water is provided, however, we suggest that you consider bringing an umbrella and sun screen.What is the best way to get to the Memorial Service? Metro! The closest Metro stop is Capitol South, which is one block away. Capitol South is located on the Orange/Blue Lines. There is no street parking anywhere near the Capitol, so please don't attempt to drive to the event. Due to security restrictions at the Capitol, we ask that everyone arrives at least one hour early.What are the rules concerning weapons? The security at the event is handled by the Secret Service and the Capitol Police. All attendees will be required to go through metal detectors before entering the grounds of the Capitol. If you do not need your weapon, we suggest you leave it at home. Law enforcment officers with weapons MUST have valid photo ID's. Non-law enforcement attendees are prohibited from bringing weapons.How long is the Memorial Service? The Memorial Service is expected to run approximately two hours.Are there any events planned after the Memorial Service? National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments thoughout the United States as well as from agencies thoughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other.Are you a Uniform Motor Officer coming to the event? Chiefs, Commanders and Motor Officers, The week of May 12 through May 16, 2010 will mark the Annual Police Week Memorial observance. I have the honor of coordinating this years’ escorts in support of The Concern’s of Police Survivors (COP’S) and COP’S Kids events. Motorcycle units wishing to honor our fellow officers, their eternal sacrifice and their surviving family members should schedule their working hours around the follow assignments. Wednesday, May 12th and Thursday May 13, the police survivors will arrive at Ronald Reagan Airport. Motor Officers should report to the lower concourse, ready to ride at 0900 hours. Wednesday’s expected end of tour is 1800 hours. Thursday’s tour is extended. Thursday, May 13th, In addition to the airport arrivals is the Annual Candle Light Vigil. All motors should report to the Alexandria Hilton Hotel, 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria Va. NLT 1600 hours, ready to ride. End of tour is expected to be 2000 hours. Friday, May 14th Motors have NO official Duties. They are encouraged to sightsee and enjoy the local area. Saturday, May 15th is the Annual Peace Officers Memorial Day Service. Motor Officers wishing to ride in the early escorts should report to the Alexandria Hilton NLT 0730 hours. Officers wishing to ride in the final procession should report to the rear of the Alexandria Hilton NLT 0930 hours. All Motor Officer responsibilities end at 1200 hours. Sunday, May 16th Motors will escort the COP’S Kids buses to the National FBI Training Academy, Quantico, Va. Officers should report ready to ride at 0830 hours at the Alexandria Hilton, Seminary Rd. Officers should report to Quantico for the return ride NLT 1530 hours. This is a rewarding experience for all motor officers who choose to work the escort. PVP Communications will furnish lunch and refreshments at the airport and all reporting escorts. Their continued support for the Motor Officers during this special event is appreciated.
